The companies that some Pennsylvania employees work for may not have standards for safety and health reporting that are consistent with other companies. An international organization called the Center for Safety and Health Sustainability released a report on Aug. 1 that was a followup to a 2013 report. Both reports looked at companies in the Corporate Knights’ Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations and how those companies tracked and reported on-the-job injuries, illnesses and fatalities that happened in the workplace.
The organization looked at data from June to December 2016 to reach its conclusions. It said that it had found little improvement since its last report in how companies coordinated their safety and health tracking and reporting. The companies were not consistent in how they collected data, in the language they used, or in how they reported incidents.
CSHS said the issue was that companies could not reach a consensus on how to record and measure health and safety so that standards could be created to use in global sustainability indexes. The organization offered recommendations for improving reporting across companies. It said that companies should track incidents along the supply chain as well as within the companies themselves. One company that had 27 deaths in its supply chain still reported zero fatalities. Another was for companies to track safety management systems at work sites.
When workplace injuries do occur, employees are usually eligible for workers’ compensation. This provides money for workers and their families to live on while recovering from an accident or illness. The injured worker may want to talk to an attorney about the accident and what the appropriate action might be if the injury was caused by the negligence of a non-employer third party.
